You don’t really lack time; you’re just distracted

How often have you used this excuse, “I want to do it but I just don’t have the time”?

Whether you want to start a business, go back to college, go to the gym, read or write a book, start a blog or pursue a hobby – is lack of time your biggest excuse?

Come to think of it, we all have 24 hours a day, right?

Then, why is it that some people can accomplish so much and still have time for family, friends, health and sleep while others seem to be constantly rushing and lacking time?

The truth is we never really lack time. In most cases we are just distracted.

Most of the time we are busy with things that are not that important:

  • Watching funny videos on YouTube, Instagram or TikTok
  • Watching Movies/ Series at home
  • Reading comments on Facebook
  • Gossiping with “le squad”
  • Political arguments
  • Going through friends’ WhatsApp statuses

Am not saying this is all wrong, but am concerned at the time we spend with these activities. Valuable time we could use to accomplish our goals – writing a business plan, keeping fit at the gym, publishing a book, learning a new skill on YouTube, starting a blog, starting that course in college etc.

According to a recent survey by Facebook, Kenyans spend 6 hours on Facebook everyday! And teens in the US spend more than 7 hours on screens for entertainment daily.

This is time we can use to do great things for ourselves, family, community and business – if we put all these unnecessary distractions aside.

Apart from being distracted, chances are you also haven’t found a compelling reason to start. That why. That burning desire.

Because if you can find the reason why you should start that course or join that fitness program, etc then you’ll find the time, and you’ll make it happen. It’s all about being productive and making time.

At the end of the day, we’re actually just allowing ourselves to be distracted because we lack the burning desire or compelling reason to take action.

The next time you feel that you don’t have time, stop scrolling on Facebook or Instagram.

Stop trying to keep up with the next episode of series on Netflix.

It’s all within our control and it’s our choice.

If your dream or goal is important enough, you will find the time and you will make it happen. All you need is a compelling reason to act.

What’s your reason?
